Yahoo! and Microsoft Joints For a Deal

Multiple reports tonight say's Microsoft and Yahoo joints for a deal where Microsoft's BING become the new Yahoo! search engine and Yahoo! will sell ads against those search results on its site. There's a whole lot of money in play, but as users we don't think that's the most interesting part of this story. There may be some very interesting consequences, both positive and negative, for innovation - our favorite part of the online experience. Our guess is that it will be a net negative for forward-looking web users.

Bing's new substantial market share will put new pressure on Google to step up to the plate and wow us again, but the likely loss of Yahoo's own search work could be a major loss for the web at large. There are some awesome projects underway at Yahoo! Search and the people who work on them have to be concerned about the future of their jobs and work. We're worried too, we really like the things they've made for us to use. This will create a great pressure to google The Google search experience has been slow and steady in terms of visible evolution over the years. The team there is, no doubt, always working to improve the search product - but few bold moves have really been taken. The introduction of multi-media into search results has been great, the search wiki product has just been pointless clutter, the voice search on the iPhone is cool.

Yahoo , Search Engine In New Look

Yahoo has introduced a new feature for its image search, that lets users refine searches based on specific locations.

Now, if you search for a place, the Yahoo Travel Image Refiner enables users to explore various points of interest related to specific travel areas including related information about these destinations, with the menu displayed on the left-hand side of the screen that points you to images of different points of interest from that location.

Now, if a user clicks on one of the points of interest, you will see an overlay of the images over your original search results with results from that particular topic, but this can easily be closed while your original results remain there.

This feature is useful considering that most of the research on travel sites is now carried out mainly online by consumers. With this sort of feature only improves the travel planning process on the web. Yahoo says the Image Search Refiner is presently available for location-specific searches, but is planning to expand this functionality to other types of image searches in the future.

Microsoft to strip Internet Explorer browser

San Francisco: Microsoft is to strip its Internet Explorer browser from the new version of its Windows 7 operating system that it sells in Europe, the company announced Thursday.

Microsoft said the move was designed to meet criticism from European Union (EU) regulators who have launched an investigation into whether bundling the browser with the operating system is in breach of European anti-trust rules.

"Given the pending Microsoft to strip Internet Explorer browser from European Windows, we will offer it separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users," Microsoft said in a statement.

"This means that computer manufacturers and users will be free to install Internet Explorer on Windows 7, or not, as they prefer."

Windows 7 is scheduled to be generally available Oct 22. Ironically, Microsoft is making the changes as rival firms like Firefox, Apple Safari and Google Chrome chip away at Internet Explorer's once unassailable lead.
